Description

Al-Zahra Children’s Home- a home for orphans- was established in 2015, in Arusha, Tanzania. This is Welfare Aid International’s flagship project, having been involved from its very inception.

The planning for this centre began in 2014, and it became a reality in late 2015. The funding for the centre has come almost exclusively from Welfare Aid’s fundraising activities, in conjunction with another Sydney-based charity, the WISH Foundation. In 2016, two of our committee members were able to visit the centre in person and meet the three orphan girls who are currently residing in the home.

These girls come from highly disadvantaged backgrounds from rural parts of Tanzania where a nomadic lifestyle is common. They have each lost both parents, and their extended families are unable or unwilling to care for them. They have all suffered abuse of some sort in the past.

Welfare Aid has a local representative who manages the orphanage. She is a local resident of Arusha and is well informed of the needs of the orphans and the wider community.

The girls receive accommodation, basic food and water supplies, clothing and other living essentials within the Centre. They have also been enrolled in the local prestigious private school at discounted rates. We were very happy to see that they started in Kindergarten class in January 2016. They receive regular support and counselling from the manager of the centre. There is a full-time female carer living with the girls.

Our aim is to slowly accommodate more local children who come from highly disadvantaged backgrounds and have no one to care for them.

Background:

Arusha is a small town located in the northern part of Tanzania in East Africa. The majority of the local population live under the poverty line. Many children have lost their parents due to disease or have been abandoned due to insufficient ability to support the children. Many have taken to the streets and have fallen into crime. Females are the majority of the victims from this situation and many young children have lost their way due to lack of support. Many do not attend school or even complete their education due to all the problems they face.

What can you do?

This is your opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these young orphan girls. To give them hope of a future that most in their situation only can even dream of having. This is their second chance - and it is your chance to help make it happen! This is an ongoing project. The costs are outlined below. We are asking donors to sponsor this project with a regular $100 monthly donation.

On-going Costs

Running costs of approximately $20,000.00 per year which includes meals, carer salary, utilities and rent. Education, which includes study at a private school at discounted rates.
